Yorkies:

A good gentle pin brush, a medium tooth comb, a small gentle slicker brush, a small fine tooth comb for the areas around the muzzle (the beard) is recommended. Make sure that you use a good gentle shampoo. (remember that Yorkie"s hair is very much like human hair). A good conditioner &/or detangler is a must for a long coat. Always make sure that the shampoo is rinsed out well from the coat. Leaving soap in will cause your dog to scratch or dig at his skin and develop irritation or hot spots. A gentle hand in brushing & combing will go a long way to a happier and more co-operative dog. Keep the ears clean, and the toe nails cut. Weekly bathing is highly recommended, to keep your dog looking like the beauty he is. (Especially if you have chosen to have him sleep in your bed.) Daily brushing is highly recommended to keep the coat matt and tangle free and it's a good time for you and your dog to relax for fifteen minutes together.

Great Pyrenee's:

Great Pyrenee's benefit from weekly brushing's. Their coat is such that the dirt tends to fall out as it is brushed, so not requring the weekly baths. The Pyr has a double coat, an undercoat for warmth that sheds out in Spring. (Blowing Coat) Recommended grooming tools, a good pin brush, a medium to coarse comb, a detangler comb, a gentle slicker brush, toe nail clippers, a good blow dryer. For shampoo use a good dog whitening shampoo. A conditioner is not necessary. Make sure the shampoo is rinised out completely or you will have your dog scratching, and biting at the place where the shampoo dried in causing a skin irritation. Drying a Pyr takes quite a few hours and lots of patience on you & your dogs part. Just because the Pyr has lots of hair doesn't mean he isn't sensitive to jerking out matts or heavy handling of the slicker or pin brushes. Use a gentle hand and you will have a happier and more co-operative dog for this bath and future bath's. Remember the Pyr has extra set of dew claws on the hind legs. (two per leg) Make sure when you cut toenails, you don't forget these also. The Pyr when grommed is a very beautiful, regal animal and commands attention just by his stature.

Jack Russell Terriers
